How to Display Your Cross Stitch in a Hoop
A wooden embroidery hoop is one of the easiest and most beautiful ways to display your finished cross stitch. It highlights the design, adds a handmade touch, and is ready to hang as soon as you're finished.
Here's how to turn your stitched piece into a clean, finished display.
1. Choose the Right Hoop
Select a hoop that's slightly larger than your stitched design, leaving an even border of fabric all the way around.
A balanced border helps frame your work and gives the finished piece a clean, polished look.
2. Center Your Design

Place your finished cross stitch between the two hoop rings and adjust it until the design is centered. Gently tighten the screw while smoothing the fabric until it's taut and wrinkle-free. Take a moment to make sure the design is sitting straight before tightening the hoop completely. |
3. Trim the Excess Fabric
Using sharp fabric scissors, trim away the excess Aida, leaving about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of fabric extending beyond the hoop.
This provides just enough fabric to neatly finish the back without adding unnecessary bulk.
4. Cover the Back

Cut a circle from card-stock or another sturdy material to fit inside the back of the hoop. Placing it over the back of your stitching hides the thread ends and prevents the design from being see-through when displayed. |
5. Sew a Running Stitch Around the Edge

Thread your needle with sewing thread or embroidery floss and sew a simple running stitch around the edge of the fabric, about ½ inch (1 cm) from the trimmed edge. Continue all the way around the hoop, leaving both thread ends free. |
6. Gather and Secure the Fabric

Now gently pull the thread to gather the fabric around the back of the hoop. As the fabric gathers, it will pull neatly toward the center and create a smooth finish around the edge. Once you're happy with the tension, tie the thread securely with a knot to hold everything in place. |
